Emergency Medical Services

Brighton Fire Rescue District takes pride in its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division, which is driven by our dedicated and skilled personnel. When you call 911, you can trust that you will receive exceptional care from our compassionate team. Our unwavering commitment to professional development and the growth of our EMS division ensures we meet the evolving needs of our community.

In 2023, our crews responded to 5,719 EMS calls, representing 73% of the district’s total call volume. To address this growing demand, all five of our firehouses are staffed with cross-trained personnel who provide both firefighting and emergency medical services. Our team includes 75 certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and 32 Paramedics, distributed across three shifts.

Every medical emergency response is supported by a fire apparatus and a medic unit capable of delivering advanced life support and transporting patients to the hospital. We have eight apparatuses ready to respond to medical emergencies every day of the year. Our three medic units are staffed with a Paramedic and one EMT each. To prepare for anticipated increases in call volume, we have ordered three additional medic units to expand our capacity in line with community growth.

The Safety and Medical (SAM) Officer oversees medical incidents to ensure that patient care and safety standards are upheld, providing our community with the highest quality of care. Additionally, our seven State of Colorado certified Field Training Officers (FTOs) are dedicated to ongoing education, ensuring that all medical staff are thoroughly trained and well-informed.

The District is certified by the State of Colorado as both an Education Group and a Licensed Ambulance Service, underscoring our commitment to excellence in emergency medical services. The EMS Division is further supported by the Division Chief of EMS, Austin Coleman, and the Deputy Chief of Operations, John Blunt, with medical direction and oversight provided by a licensed Emergency Medical Physician.
