Wildland / Urban Interface

Brighton Fire Rescue District covers over 150 square miles and is a rural district with an agricultural presence. The District covers farmland, open space, and Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). WUI is a mix of residential homes and wildland fuel modules such as native grass, crops, or trees. These WUI areas exist in every part of the District. With the expansive development of Brighton and surrounding areas, residential neighborhoods continue to be  built within the WUI environment. Following the Marshall Fire, the WUI setting is a major concern for the District. The team regularly discusses, plans, and trains for a similar event.

The BFRD Wildland Team is led by Captain Brian Guyer and staffed by 13 personnel. All members have their Red Cards and are trained to the basic level of Wildland Firefighting which entails the S-130/S-190 certification, successful completion of the Pack Test (an arduous fitness test), and attendance of an annual Wildland refresher.  The team is a deployable resource for the entire nation and will continue to grow in order to support and respond to both local and national incidents. Its apparatus includes 5 Brush Trucks and 4 Tenders.
